Golf Handicap Explained: Average Handicap and What Each Index Shoots

Your Handicap Index is the average of the 8 lowest Score Differentials from your last 20 rounds — so it describes what you are capable of, not what you average. That is why a golfer playing off any given handicap shoots 2 to 5 strokes above it in most rounds, and plays exactly to it in only about 20–25 % of them.

What each handicap shoots

On a par-72 course of standard difficulty (Course Rating 72.0, Slope Rating 113), each Handicap Index converts to the target score and typical round below. Pick a handicap for the full breakdown, including the strokes received on every set of tees.

These figures cover golfers who maintain a Handicap Index, a group that skews towards more frequent players; the broader golfing population scores higher.

Three numbers that are easy to confuse:

The Slope Rating is what makes an index portable. It runs from 55 to 155, and 113 is the standard: on 113-slope tees your Course Handicap equals your Handicap Index, on harder tees you receive more strokes, on easier tees fewer.

Frequently asked questions

What is a golf handicap?

A golf handicap - formally a Handicap Index - is a number that describes your demonstrated playing ability, calculated as the average of the 8 lowest Score Differentials from your most recent 20 rounds. It lets players of different abilities compete fairly, and it is portable between courses.

What is the average golf handicap?

The average Handicap Index is 14.0 for men and 28.8 for women, across the 3.68 million golfers in the United States who carry one. The single most common band for men is 10.0 to 14.9, which holds 26.48% of male players; for women it is 25.0 to 29.9, holding 19.06%.

What is a good golf handicap?

Anything under 10 is generally considered a strong amateur handicap and single figures are a common goal - 29.81% of male golfers carry an index below 10.0. A Handicap Index of 18 means you play roughly to bogey golf on a course of standard difficulty. The maximum Handicap Index the World Handicap System issues is 54.0 (Rule 5.3).

Does my handicap change from course to course?

Your Handicap Index does not, but the strokes you actually receive do. That number is your Course Handicap, and it is your Handicap Index scaled by the Slope Rating of the tees you are playing, plus the difference between Course Rating and par.
